Stock Symbol
A stock symbol is a unique code, abbreviation, or a unique combination of letters assigned to a publicly traded company’s stock on a stock exchange. Stock symbols are used to identify the stock in the exchange and for trading purposes.
Stock symbols are usually assigned by the stock exchange on which the company’s stock is listed, and are typically based on the company’s name or its industry classification. For example, the stock symbol for Apple Inc. is AAPL, and the stock symbol for Google parent company Alphabet Inc. is GOOG.
